Never Skip: Tyler’s Alternative Playlist
Written by Tyler Kruid on November 25, 2017
Although the Midwest is a great place to live, it takes a bit longer for certain types of music to land here. Fortunately for streaming options the tide is starting to shift. I struggle to understand why Alternative Rock is not more popular in this part of the country.
Portugal. The Man’s ‘Feel it Still’ was at the top of the charts for what seemed like a year and Imagine Dragons seem to be a staple on the Top 100 Charts. At times, I feel the only way for an Alternative Rock song to become popular is by it being picked up to use in a commercial for a brand.
Have you ever noticed that most songs that you hear in commercials fall under the Alternative Rock genre? Why is that? When I try to explain Alternative Rock to someone it is hard for me to do because there is such a wide range. I refer to Alternative Rock as feel good music, or music that makes you feel. It might not make want to dance, but it may make you want to sway from side-to-side or invoke some type of emotions.
I have many go-to playlist that range from Hip-Hop on my gym playlist to The Beatles for background music, but my most cherished playlist is the one that is simply titled ‘1’. I am not sure why I gave it this title years ago, but it is a no skip playlist. I can listen to every song on this playlist from beginning to end, and if you know me, that is a pretty big deal!
This playlist has a mix of everything from Rebalution to Collective Soul, but it is mostly comprised of Alternative Rock. Below are the Alternative Rock songs that fall into my never skip category (in no particular order).
The Shins – Simple Song
Beware of Darkness – All Who Remain
Kodaline – All I Want
The Sounds – Something to Die For
Vance Joy – Riptide
Grizfolk – The Struggle
Cage the Elephant – Cigarette Daydreams
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Easily
Flobots – Happy Together (Cover)
Say Anything – Sure Baby… Hold Back
Arcade Fire – Ready To Start
Awolnation – Kill Your Heroes
Cold War Kids – First
Judah & the Lion – Take It All Back
